Providing Digital Education in Phnom Penh’s Urban Slums

In the bustling city of Phnom Penh, many children living in urban slums lack access to technology and digital literacy skills, putting them at a disadvantage in an increasingly digital world. A local nonprofit called Digital Futures Cambodia (DFC) was determined to bridge this gap by providing computer education to underprivileged children. However, they needed funding to set up a computer lab and train teachers. That’s when they turned to ODBOX Ventures.

The Campaign: “Bridging the Digital Divide in Phnom Penh”

DFC launched a campaign on www.odboxventures.com, titled “Bridging the Digital Divide in Phnom Penh.” The campaign highlighted the stories of children who had never touched a computer before, as well as the potential impact of digital literacy on their future opportunities. ODBOX Ventures’ platform allowed DFC to reach a global audience, with donors contributing to fund the project.

The Results

The campaign raised over $70,000 in just four months. The funds were used to:

• Set up a fully equipped computer lab with 20 computers, internet access, and educational software.
• Train local teachers in digital literacy and computer skills.
• Develop a curriculum tailored to the needs of the students, covering basic computer skills, coding, and online safety.
• Provide scholarships for 50 students to attend the program free of charge.

The impact was transformative. Children who once had no access to technology were now learning to type, code, and navigate the internet. Many students expressed newfound confidence and aspirations to pursue careers in technology. The program also attracted the attention of local businesses, which began offering internships and job opportunities to graduates.

Thanks to the support of donors and the innovative tools provided by ODBOX Ventures, Digital Futures Cambodia has empowered hundreds of children in Phnom Penh’s urban slums, proving that access to technology can open doors to endless possibilities.
