Building a Library for Rural Communities in Cambodia

In the rural province of Kampong Thom, Cambodia, access to books and educational resources was nearly nonexistent. Children in the village of Sambor had no library or reading materials, limiting their ability to learn and explore beyond their school curriculum. Recognizing this gap, a local organization called Cambodia Literacy Project (CLP) partnered with ODBOX Ventures to launch a campaign to build the village’s first library.

The Campaign: “Books for Sambor: Unlocking Knowledge”

The campaign featured videos of children expressing their dreams of becoming teachers, doctors, and engineers, as well as testimonials from parents and community leaders. The Results

Within three months, CLP raised over $50,000 through ODBOX Ventures. The funds were used to:

• Construct a community library equipped with shelves, desks, and chairs.
• Stock the library with over 5,000 books in Khmer and English, covering a wide range of subjects.
• Train local librarians to manage the library and organize reading programs for children.
• Launch after-school reading clubs and storytelling sessions to foster a love for learning.

The library became a hub of activity, with children and adults alike visiting daily to read, learn, and explore new ideas. Enrollment in local schools increased, and teachers reported significant improvements in students’ reading and comprehension skills. The success of the campaign inspired other villages in Kampong Thom to seek similar support, creating a ripple effect of literacy and education across the province.
